Songs, Flowers, You and I
words and music by Bill Pere

So I decided to look at the years I'd captured in my scrapbook
Remembering your kisses, dried upon my memory
And anonymous carnations that lie crushed between the pages
Speak of days gone by, Days of you and I

Though I'd sung so many perfect songs to many grateful crowds
I never heard the clapping of your heartbeat
In every choir, in every chorus, every word I sang was for us
But when the song was done, the couplet was still unrhymed

And if I song for you now, will you hear me?
Will you hear me?

Oh, I'd smile, they'd say “She's always happy”, but they couldn't see
That your taciturn indifference was killing me
Now all the wilted pink corsages cry, wrinkled with the sorrow
Of the broken promise that was you and I

And if I sing for you now, will you hear me?
And if I sing for you now, will you hear me?

So I closed my book and took a last look at your picture
Then I sat down to sing a song and forget you...
And though I know you didn't want me,
The times we shared still haunt me
Flowers, songs and days of you and I
Flowers, songs and days of you and I
