Connecticut
Compromise
Words
and Music by Bill Pere
(Roger
Sherman's Eyes)
Virginia
says "My way!", New Jersey says "My way!"
Constitutions at an impasse as the states all play,
The big states have more people, the small states say "We're equal!".
Up stood a simple cobbler, he began to speak,
To see the argument arise through Roger Sherman's eyes
He saw that what was needed was a compromise
The idea then arose and Connecticut proposed
A way to represent the people as the nation grows...
Oh,
Connecticut Compromise
Combine both points of view, Have not one House, but two,
And America is glad for the insight that he had
He was determined, he was wise,
We thank Roger Sherman's eyes...
Now in the
Senate, every state is equal in debate
No matter what their census all have equal weight
In the House, the big states' voice is louder in each choice
They have more representatives with hands to hoist...
Oh,
Connecticut Compromise
Combine both points of view, Have not one House, but two,
And America is glad for the insight that he had
He was determined, he was wise,
We thank Roger Sherman's eyes...
